A Little About Eyebrows!

This post will be geared towards.. EYEBROWS! I figured I share a little bit of knowledge that I have being an almost graduate Esthetician student.. SO here's just a few tips/tricks/fun facts!

Why are brows important? THEY FRAME THE FACE! Great balanced, shaped brows can actually enhance your facial features. The key elements to fantastic brows are shape, color, maintenance, balance, symmetry, and color. It sounds like quite a lot, but it really isn't. Now let me say, there are guides to where your brows should start (measuring from the side of the nose/inner corner of the eye  upward.) , where your arch should begin (the outer circle of the iris of the eye upward.) , where your brows should end (the outer corner of the nose to the outer corner of the eye.).. HOWEVER, everytime that I perform a brow service, I take each client as EACH client. I shape their brows to their face. So take that into consideration, that what looks good on someone else might not be the right fit for you! There are many ways to correct brows or use brows to correct another area that you may not be pleased with (i.e. low forehead, close-set eyes, long face.).

*If any of you would like to hear, learn, or read about corrective techniques, please comment on this post & I'd be more than happy to do an entire post dedicated to corrective brow techniques.*

Now let me speak a little further into when I say "COLOR" as a key element.. If you have light brown hair, using a black pencil to fill them in.. JUST NO. DON'T DO IT. You could have the most beautifully shaped brows, but filling them in with that black pencil will just completely take all of that AWAY! Lol. I always like to use a shade (two shades darker at the most) closest to the hair color to fill them in. For blondes, I love using Benefit's Brow Zings in Light because of versatile it is, I've used it on platinum blondes to dark blondes/light brunette. Another great choice for blondes is MAC's eyebrow pencil in Fling. LOVE this pencil, I cannot say that enough. It is incredibly natural, pair it with MAC's Soba eyeshadow and you're good to go!  For brunettes and even dark blondes using Benefit's Brow Zings in Medium (I just love Brow Zings as a product in general because it's WONDERFUL!), MAC's brow pencil in Spiked, and the ELF brow kit in Medium (only $3!). Now for my very deep brunette/jet black haired ladies, honestly the Benefit's Brow Zings in Dark (with a LIGHT hand) is what I find works best because the wax is natural enough looking to not leave the brows looking way too harsh. When filling in the brows there are so many ways, so many! I, myself, go for a more natural look. I take an angled brush with the wax side of Benefit's Brow Zings and lightly fill in sparse areas, also to darken my brows a bit. On occasion I will carve my brows using concealer under the arch to give it a very defined look! But in my opinion, product goes a LOOOOOONG way, and with my facial features, less is more.

As for shaping.. Let me say this, if you are not confident, please, please, please GO TO A PROFESSIONAL. That DOES NOT include nail salons. lol. I say this because I have had to correct so many brows that could have been beautiful if they would not have been over -tweezed or over done. They still come out FIXABLE.. We want gorgeous brows, not fixable! So if you're just starting out, I suggest trimming. Trimming makes quite a bit of a difference, and is not so frightening than go straight to town on those brows!

Let's start with some tools! Of course we all know.. Good ol' TWEEZERS are a MUST. A disposable mascara wand (you can find these pretty inexpensive at Sally's Beauty Supply.) is actually one of the most important tools! Brow Scissors. ( These are just basic tools this list could go on & on.. including brow powders, angled liner brushes, wax, brow pencils, etc.)

To start your trim.. Make sure your brows & skin around your brows are clean! Using your mascara/brow wand to brush the brows upward, trim any hairs that are outside of your brow line (it will be a VERY small amount.) Even this step in itself will help your brows to look more maintained. If you have stray hairs that you can now see out of your natural brow line, these will be the ones to tweeze! Make sure that as you go along, you are brushing your eyebrows into their natural shape so you can see the progress and know definitely when to stop. With these two steps, your trim is simple and makes a difference.

If you'd like to see a post of a tutorial on any of the steps to shape the brow, corrective techniques, filling in brows, etc.. Comment below & I will dedicate posts to just those subjects.
